werefreed.ThefullrestorationoftheUnionwastheworkofahighlycontentiouspostwareraknownasReconstruction.Thewarproducedmorethan970,000casualties(3%ofthepopulation),includingapproximately620,000soldierdeaths—⅔bydisease.Thecausesofthewar,thereasonsforitsoutcome,andeventhenameofthewaritselfaresubjectsoflingeringcontroversyeventoday.ThemainresultsofthewarweretherestorationandstrengtheningoftheUnion,andtheendofslaveryintheUnitedStates.b.TheReconstructionaftertheCivilWarReconstruction,oneofthemostturbulentandcontroversialerasinAmericanhistory,beganduringtheCivilWarandendedin1877.ItwitnessedAmerica"sfirstexperimentininterracialdemocracy.JustasthefateofslaverywascentraltothemeaningoftheCivilWar.Reconstructionremainsrelevanttoday,theroleofthefederalgovernmentinprotectingcitizens"rights,andthepossibilityofeconomicandracialjusticearestillunresolved.CentraltoReconstructionwastheeffortofformerslavestobreathefullmeaningintotheirnewlyacquiredfreedom,andtoclaimtheirrightsascitizens.AfterrejectingtheReconstructionplanofPresidentAndrew Johnson,theRepublicanCongressenactedlawsandConstitutionalamendmentsthatempoweredthefederalgovernmenttoenforcetheprincipleofequalrights,andgaveblackSouthernerstherighttovoteandholdoffice.ThenewSoutherngovernmentsconfrontedviolentoppositionfromtheKuKluxKlanandsimilargroups.Meantime,theNorthabandoneditscommitmenttoprotecttherightsoftheformerslaves.Reconstructionended,andwhitesupremacywasrestoredthroughouttheSouth.Formuchofthiscentury,Reconstructionwaswidelyviewedasaneraofcorruptionandmisgovernment,supposedlycausedbyallowingblackstotakepartinpolitics.ThisinterpretationhelpedtojustifytheSouth"ssystemofracialsegregationanddenythevotetoblacks.Today,becauseofextensivenewresearchandprofoundchangesinAmericanracerelations,historiansviewReconstructionfarmorefavorably,asatimeofgenuineprogressforformerslavesandtheSouthasawhole.ForallAmericans,Reconstructionwasatimeoffundamentalsocial,economic,andpoliticalchange.TheoverthrowofReconstructionlefttofuturegenerationsthetroublesomeproblemofracialjustice.Ⅱ.AnalysisofthecharacterofScarlettinfourperiods Scarlettiscomplicated.Ononehand,sheisvain,rebel,selfish,egocentric,self-centeredandself-indulgent,ontheotherhand,sheisimbuedwithwise,inheritedbrave,determined,independent,responsible,obstinateandself-strivinggleams.Allthesecharactershaveadeepanddeterminativeinfluenceonherlifeandlove.Scarlett’scharacterizationshowsupinfourperiodsinGoneWiththeWind.AtthebeginningofthenovellivinginTara,Scarlettisawildandstrong-willedlady.Sheisnotonlycharmingandattractive,butalsovain,willful,naiveandselfish.WhenScarlettfirstlivesinAtlanta,thedisappointmentofloveandthesufferingofthewarmakeherbecomebraveandresponsible,andsheisselfishandcarefree.ComingbacktoherhomeTara,inordertokeepherhomearound,Scarlettbecomesbrave,determined,obstinate,self-strivingandgreedy.ThenwhenScarlettgoesbacktoAtlanta,sheisindependent,determined,indomitableandself-centered.A.Vain,naive,obstinate,vigorous,charming,self-importantandegocentricinearlyinTara.Inthisperiodoflife,Scarlettisavain,charming,selfish,willful,carefree,egotisticandself-impotantgirl.LivinginTara,Scarlettisayounglady.Atthebeginningofthisnovel,Scarlettisonly16yearsold.Sheisnaive,charming,vigorousandcarefree.Atthesametime,theonlythingforScarlettistodressup
