内蒙古大学外国语学院英语专业学士学位论文AnAnalysisofAmericanDreaminTheGreatGatsby:FromtheEstablishmenttotheDisillusionmentINTRODUCTIONThethesisisabrieflongitudinalstudyofAmericanDreaminthenovelTheGreatGatsby.ThisthesisanalyzestheestablishmentofGatsby’sAmericanDreamandthereasonsleadingtohisAmericanDream’sdisillusionment.Throughthisthesis,wecanhaveadialecticalviewofthereasonswhyGatsbycannotrealizehisAmericanDream.Themainbodyofthethesisismadeupofthreeparts.ThefirstpartisageneralintroductiontothegreatauthorFitzgerald,hisnovelTheGreatGatsbyanditswritingbackground.InordertotracebacktothereasonsthatresultinthedisillusionmentofGatsby’sAmericanDream,thesecondpartreviewstheestablishmentandthedisillusionmentofGatsby’sAmericanDream.ThethirdpartfocusesonanalyzingthereasonsforhisAmericanDream’sdisillusionment.Intheend,thethesiscomestoaconclusionthatthedisillusionmentofGatsby’sAmericanDreamisunavoidable.14 内蒙古大学外国语学院英语专业学士学位论文ChapterⅠBACKGROUNDINFORMATION1.1FitzgeraldandHisLiteraryWorksFitzgeraldwasbornonSeptember24,1896andSt.PaulMinnesotawashishometown.WhilehewasastudentinPrincetonUniversity,theyoungmandevelopedhishobbyandskillinwriting.WhentheFirstWorldWarbrokeout,hebecameasoldier.InatrainingcampinAlabama,hemetandfellinlovewithZeldaSayre.ThiswomanfinallymarriedFitzgeraldandbecamethemodelformostofthebeautifulfemalecharactersinhisnovels.ThisSideofParadise,theBeautifulandDamned,TenderistheNightandTheGreatGatsbywerehisfourwell-knownnovels.ThelastoneTheGreatGatsby,whichestablishedFitzgerald’ssignificantpositioninAmericanmodernliterature,isoftenviewedasamirrorofAmericansocietyinthe1920s.In1925,FitzgeraldpublishedhismostfamousnovelTheGreatGatsby.ThenovelreflectedtheselfishnessandbossyofAmericanvestedinterestgroupsrepresentedbyTomandpointedoutthatGatsby’stragedyiscausedbyhisfantasyoflifeandhislackofcomprehensionoftheuppertendom’sessence.1.2LostGenerationandtheJazzAgeFrancisScottKeyFitzgeraldwasoneofthegreatestwritersinthetwentiethcentury,andhisworksreflectedtheJazzAge.HeisregardedasamemberoftheLostGenerationinthe14 内蒙古大学外国语学院英语专业学士学位论文2.1.1Gatsby’sDreamofWealthBecomingwealthyisthemostbasicelementinGatsby’sAmericanDream.Gatsby’sdreamofwealthreflectsthegoldrushinthenewcontinentAmerica.Bornwithahumblefamilybackground,Gatsbyisayoungpersonwhohasambitionsanddreams.Inordertorealizehispersonalideals,hechangeshisoriginalnameGatzintoGatsbythathasthemeaning“thesonofgod”andGatsby"sambitioncanbeseenhereclearly.Gatsbyisapractical,activeandperseverantperson.Wecanseefromhisschedulethatheisanambitiousyouthwhodoesthingsinaplannedandorderlyway.Hisplantorealizehisdreamisarrangedverywellandhetakesgettingrichdreamasthefirststep.Hebelievesthatifthereisamaterialbase,hecanliveawealthylifeofhighsocialstatus.Therefore,inordertomakethedreamofwealthcometrue,Gatsbyiswillingtosufferandbearpains.Heevenrunsriskstocommitsmuggling.Intheend,hecanholdgrandbanquetsinhisbluegarden,theguestsgenerallylaughingandchatting.2.1.2Gatsby’sDreamofHighSocialPositionWithenoughmoneyandwealth,thenextdreamofGatsbyistobecomeamemberoftheupperclassinthesociety.Andthemethodheusesisconstantlyholdingalargebanquettoshowoffhiswealthandtogetacquaintedwithcharactersbelongingtotheuppersocialclassatthesametime.Gatsbyhopesthatthesocietycanaccepthim,andthereforefeelateasewhenenjoyingeverythingthattheupperclassesenjoy.ThiskindofideacanalsobeconsideredasamicrocosmofAmericanDream,becausefromthebeginningoftheestablishmentoftheAmericansociety,equalopportunityandpeople’ssubjectiveinitiativewereadvocated.However,theupperclassesstilllookdownuponthosewhohaveahumblebackgroundsuchasGatsby.Alotofnewupstartslikethesepeopleareonlysmugglingguys.ItiseasyforustoseethatGatsby,througheverystruggle,cannotbeacceptedbythesocietyeitherfromhisappearanceorfromhisinnerworld.14 内蒙古大学外国语学院英语专业学士学位论文2.1.3Gatsby’sDreamofLoveGatsby"sfirsttwodreamsarethebasisofthethirdone.Therealizationofhisdreamsofwealthandhighsocialpositionisonlytomakepreparationforwinningbackhislovethatisoncelostbecauseofpooreconomicconditionsandlowposition.GatsbyregardsDaisyastheembodimentofbeauty,kindnessandtruththathepursues.Inthiscase,gettingmarriedwithDaisyandlivingtogetherwithherforeverisanimportantgoalinhislifeandalsooneofthemotiveforcesofhisstruggle.However,hispursuitisdoomedtobeinvain,becauseDaisyisjustsuperficiallybeautifulbutemptyinside.Sheisashallowandselfishgirlofthebourgeoisie.Alldaylong,theultimategoalofherlifeistoseekmoneyandenjoypleasure.Gatsbycansacrificehisownlifeinordertoprotecther,butDaisyrefusestopayanycostforGatsby.Thisisthefundamentaldifferencebetweenthetwocharacters.ItisalsodoomedthatGatsby’sdreamoflovecannotberealized.2.2TheDisillusionmentofGatsby’sAmericanDreamInthisnoveltheprotagonistGatsbyissingle-mindedinlove,ambitiousandstrong-willedincareer,andpersistentinthepursueofdreams.Theestablishmentofhisdreamsisagoodbeginning,butduringtheprocessofachievingthedreamshegraduallytakesthewrongway.HeisatypicalvictimoftheJazzAge.Allofhisthreedreamsfailtoberealized.Firstofall,allofhiswealththathegainsthroughhardshipsisgonewiththelossofhislife.TheoriginalvaluesofAmericanDreamsuchashardwork,thriftandmoderationareweakerandweaker,andtheyarereplacedbymoneyworship.Therealworldisanemptyshell,andeveryoneisfondoftheimmediatepleasure.Gatsbycannotescapefromthefashionofluxury.Hespendsallhismoneyonmeaninglessthingsandgetsnothingvaluable.Inotherwords,heloseshisdreamofwealth.Secondly,hedieswithouttheacceptancebytheupperclass.Hedoesnotgethisidealsocialpositionandhisdeathhaslittleinfluenceonothers.Gatsbyisaveryidealisticperson.Thiskindofpeopleoftenseemnaiveorruncountertothereality,becausetheyarenotawareoftheirownconditioncorrectlyandthepsychologyofupperclassclearly.Hedoesnotknow14 内蒙古大学外国语学院英语专业学士学位论文ChapterⅢTHEREASONSFORTHEDISILLUSIONMENTOFGatsby’sAMERICANDREAMTheGreatGatsbyisawell-knownnovelinthehistoryofAmericanliterature.Manyscholarsbothhomeandabroadhaveanalyzedandcommentedonthisworkfromdifferentperspectives.AndthereasonsleadingtothedisillusionmentofGatsby’sdreamhasalwaysbeenahottopictodiscuss.Differentpeoplehavedifferentideas.Ingeneral,thosereasonscanbedividedintoexternalreasonsandinternalones,whichdependoneachother.BoththetwokindsofreasonsplayanimportantroleinGatsby’stragedy.Gatsby’sstrugglefortherealizationofhisdreamscannotavoidtheinfluenceofsocialenvironment,andhispersonalityisalsooneoftheimportantreasonsleadinghisdreamtofail.3.1HypocriticalInterpersonalRelationshipThisisthemostimportantexternalreasonleadingtothefinaldisillusionmentofGatsby’sAmericanDream.Inthe1920s,mostpeoplewantedtoentertheupperclassesandpursuematerialenjoyment.Theywereverycynicaltoseeksuperficialenjoymentandgreedyformaterialwealth.Duringthatperiod,treasureandcollapsedmoralstandardsmadethepursuitoffreedomandhappinessgraduallyimpossible.ThesocietywassocruelthatapersonlikeGatsbycouldnotbreakupthebondage.Therewaslittlesympathyintherelationshipamongpeople.Andtherewasnodoubtthatpeople14 内蒙古大学外国语学院英语专业学士学位论文CONCLUSIONAftercollectinginformationandcompletingthisthesis,wecanunderstandbetterthebeginning,developmentanddisillusionmentofGatsby’sAmericanDream.NowwecannotonlyfeelempatheticwithGatsby’sintricateandtragiclife,butalsoseetheinhumanityandcrueltyofthesocietyduringthatperiod.Throughthisnovel,FitzgeraldshowsthecollapseanddisillusionmentofAmericanDreaminthe1920s.Here,heroesandheroinesincludingGatsby,DaisyandTomtogetherserveasmetaphorsbyFitzgeraldtorevealthedeviationofAmericanDreaminthe1920s.ThisthesisgeneralizesthereasonswhyGatsbyfailsinthepursuingofhisdream.Duetoallkindsoffactors,thedisillusionmentofGatsby’sAmericanDreamisunavoidable.Allinall,thisnovelTheGreatGatsbycanbeabsolutelytermedasthemasterpieceofFitzgerald,anditactuallystrengthensthefamousandtalentedAmericanauthorFitzgerald’shonor.IttakesupanimportantpositioninthehistoryofAmericanliteratureeveninthewholeworldliterature.14
